Packed a picnic lunch, and left around 9:30 AM for the Fortress of Louisbourg. We arrived around 10:50 AM. Admission was $17:50 each. A shuttle took us over to the fort – and we finally arrived at the site about 11:30 a.m. The day was sunny but cool and windy. When we got to the first house (outside the walled city) the fellow told us that if we wanted to see the Canon firing at 11:45 we needed to head there straight away. There was a guard at the entrance and when she began asking names, it turned out she delayed anyone she thought was English. We stepped ahead, spoke in French announced ourselves as Jennette and Marcel and she asked our last name – when we said Ethier – she let us pass. We had about a 7 or 8 minute head start to the cannon site over everyone else.
We toured the homes of many of the townspeople; learning from those dressed in period costume all about their lives; how they survived and the crafts they did, such as making their own lace to adorn their clothing. We witnessed the drummer parade, musket firing, and noon cannon firing and then did a guided tour of the site explaining its history. We finished around 4:50 PM and we were dog tired from walking.
Before leaving the area, we visited the lighthouse here. This is the location of the very first lighthouse in Canada. The lighthouse itself, was not the original one, but was the 4th one on this location as earlier ones had been destroyed.
