Cape Spear & Humpback Whales!

Today, we got up late. We had a great night’s sleep. We turned the motor home around and got in a better position that will make our exit easier on Wed.  It was raining when we got up this morning, but decided to go touring anyway through the St. John’s area. We left about noon. Judy came with us and was our tour guide.

We went to Pouch Cove, Torbay, Flat Rock, Portugal Cove, and Middle Cove. We returned to St. John’s and visited Quidi Vidi Village, ( a charming village within a city, which still embodies the spirit of an old fishing outport). We visited the Brewery and bought a sample pack of their micro brewery beer – a must after tasting the Honey Brown Ale at Mike and Judy’s yesterday.

From there, we drove to Signal Hill. Cabot Tower stands at the top of Signal Hill. From here military men guarded the shores throughout the 1700s and 1800s. It was from here that Marconi received his first transmission across the Atlantic in 1901.  We spent quite a while looking out over the Atlantic on one side and at the fabulous view of the city on the other; reading the placards that tell the history of this very significant location. Judy took a great shot looking down at Fort Amherst. I have to admit I freaked out a few times today at the heights we drove. I always thought Quebec City had steep hills. I think these may be worse.

We then drove to Cape Spear and had our photo taken at the most easterly point in North America. We could see Cape Spear from Signal Hill and wondered if we should go or not – as at times, it seemed like the fog might be rolling in and we would be disappointed. Well disappointed, we were NOT! It was warm and sunny and we spent at least 30 minutes watching 2 or 3 humpback whales blow and play in the waters right below us. Unfortunately the battery was exhausted on our camera and the spare one was left in the car, so we did not get any pictures of the whales. Fortunately for us, Judy had her camera and snapped away, so we got pictures from her camera.

We returned to the Alexander residence shortly after 6 p.m. I made Chicken with Canadian Maple Mustard in Phyllo pastry. It was very good. Judy made rice and a salad to accompany it. After dinner, Marcel helped Mike cover the roof (he is working on re-shingling). Shortly after, we all decided to call it a night.
