Driving the Cabot Trail

It was beautiful and sunny in Baddeck - a great day to go touring.   We couldn't help but stop to take photos at a yard full of very decorated scarecrows and a painted house.

An hour into the trail, it became overcast and started to rain. We stopped in Chéticamp for lunch at a local family restaurant. We shared an order of seafood (clam strips, shrimp and scallops), an order of mussels and a glass of wine from the local winery (Jost). It was all pretty good.

Shortly after leaving the restaurant, we encountered a toll booth where the road entered the national park portion of the Cabot trail. The entrance fee was $7.80 each. The higher we went into the mountains, the more we were into the clouds. At one point, we had to put on our 4-way flashers and turn the headlights on bright. Visibility was about 50’.

When we got to a lower elevation, we were out of the clouds and stopped at a scenic overview. A lady came up and thanked us for putting on our 4-way flashers and leading her down the mountain. She said she could not see anything but our flashers. I said the only reason I was not scared was because I couldn’t see what was below or ahead at times. We drove through some small hamlets and Ingonish. The drive was nice, despite the weather. We were a bit disappointed, however, as we expected a lot more considering the reviews and advertising for the trail. We got back to the RV around 6 PM. We had braised beef (another frozen meal from home), mashed potatoes and asparagus for supper and a quiet evening after that.
